The Healthy Breakfast That Celebrities All Love



I’ve interviewed more than 100 celebrities while working for EatingWell, from Olympic gold medalists to Academy Award-winning actors. And through asking these accomplished individuals about their morning routines and favorite breakfast, I’ve noticed some healthy trends that many stars seem to implement each day.

Specifically, when asking about their go-to breakfast, many celebs have the same pick. Hint: it’s a portable option perfect for on-the-go, it’s customizable and it’s ultra-hydrating.

Did you guess smoothie? If so, you’re right! Many celebrities, including actor Jeremy Renner, country singer Kelsea Ballerini and Food Network star Sunny Anderson love to start their day with their favorite smoothie. And their preferred flavor combinations are more classic than you’d expect.

“Since I’ve gotten older now, I want to get more nutrients in me. And drinking them is the easiest way to do it,” Anderson told me in an interview. “You can put blueberries and strawberries with anything green, and you don’t even notice the green. So I’ll make a smoothie and drink that for breakfast.”

Anderson shared that a smoothie is helpful because she can walk around with it on a busy day. Ballerini also adds greens to her smoothie—a “green smoothie with coconut water” is her usual go-to.

Singer Jason Mraz also loves a green smoothie, but it doesn’t get its vibrant hue just from your typical leafy greens: his highly-rated Avocado Green Smoothie is an EatingWell favorite, and it only takes 15 minutes to make. Mraz told me that he’s been making this smoothie for years, and he still makes it.

Renner and Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) judge Derek Hough opt for protein in their smoothies. Renner scoops plant-based protein powder into his fruit-and-almond milk smoothie, whereas Hough uses collagen powder or protein powder in a packed smoothie—his favorite ingredients include blueberries and sea moss.

As for DWTS alum Kym Johnson and Today Show co-host Dylan Dreyer, their favorite smoothies are also approved by their kids.

“I make a nice breakfast smoothie for the kids and for myself with lots of spinach in it,” Johnson shared. “I add blueberries, bananas, some strawberries—we all have that drink in the morning. I think it’s a good way to start the day.”

And Dreyer’s Orange-Mango Smoothie highlights vitamin C-packed ingredients that’s great for her family’s immune health during cold and flu season. She said this smoothie “really helps” her kids on sick days.

Having a smoothie packed with fruits and vegetables every day is a great choice, as it’s bound to be loaded with antioxidants, fiber and other essential vitamins and minerals. The fiber in a smoothie can support your gut health and weight management, if that is your goal. 

Plus, adding protein (whether with powder or other sources like milk or Greek yogurt) will help keep you satisfied for longer. We’re giving this breakfast a thumbs up—we’d give it two thumbs, but the other hand is holding a smoothie!
